William Gear born 1915 : died in 1997
William Gear was one of the leading British abstract painters of his generation.
Gear was Towners curator from 1958 to 1964. During this time, he added to the diversity and modernity of the permanent Collection with his acquisitions. These included works by major British artists of the 50s and 60s such as Sandra Blow, Roger Hilton and Alan Davie.
Gear became a Senior Royal Academician in 1995.
This full-colour exhibition catalogue published by The Redfern Gallery, to coincide with the William Gear Centenary Exhibition at Towner Art Gallery in summer 2015.
This 128 page paperback includes an essay by Andrew Lambirth, a detailed bibliography and a generous selection of colour plates charting the artist's varied output from 1947 to 1991.
