Downs in Winter
King & McGaw

Eric Ravilious (1903 – 1942) was a British painter, designer, illustrator and wood-engraver, renowned for his iconic watercolour landscapes of the South Downs and English countryside. The Towner in Eastbourne (where Ravilious grew up) has long been the custodian of the largest collection of his work. Downs in Winter (1935) is another master example from Ravilious of the rolling beauty of the South Downs. As with so many of his landscapes there is the reminder of human presence and working life in the form of a ring roller in the foreground. His perspective in this painting is from Furlongs, a cottage in the South Downs home to Peggy Angus, a close friend of Ravilious and fellow student at the Royal College of Art. Furlongs became a hive of artistic activity throughout the 1930s and the subject matter of many of Ravilious’ works. When he visited Furlongs, he felt ‘he had come to his own country’, as written by his biographer Helen Binyon. The original painting is part of the Towner Collection.
