Dolly Engine - Custom Print
King & McGaw

Eric Ravilious (1903 – 1942) was a British painter, designer, illustrator and wood-engraver, renowned for his iconic watercolour landscapes of the South Downs and English countryside.
The Towner in Eastbourne (where Ravilious grew up) has long been the custodian of the largest collection of his work. Dolly Engine (1934) focuses on the small train used to pull a rake of skip wagons around the tracks of a cement works. Ravilious had become fascinated with Asham Cement Works near Lewes, which became the subject of several paintings such as this one. Ravilious captures brilliantly the odd character of the train, with its small wheels, long chimney and open-cab design, which seems to mimic the pretend trains of childhood toys. The original painting is part of the Towner Collection.
