The Westbury Horse - Custom Print
King & McGaw

Eric Ravilious (1903 – 1942) was a British painter, designer, illustrator and wood-engraver, renowned for his iconic watercolour landscapes of the South Downs and English countryside. The Towner in Eastbourne (where Ravilious grew up) has long been the custodian of the largest collection of his work.
The Westbury Horse (1939) is one of a series of paintings by Ravilious of chalk figures across the Wiltshire and South Downs. The Westbury Horse itself is often presumed ancient – chalk landscapes often lend themselves to myth making – however, no evidence of it exists before 1742. Ravilious had planned to combine the series of chalk figures into a children’s book for the Puffin Picture Book series but was unable to realise this due to his commitments as a war artist.
The original painting is part of the Towner Collection. Dimensions of original work: W54.8 x H44.8 cm
