The Bedstead - Custom Print
King & McGaw

Eric Ravilious (1903 – 1942) was a British painter, designer, illustrator and wood-engraver, renowned for his iconic watercolour landscapes of the South Downs and English countryside. The Towner in Eastbourne (where Ravilious grew up) has long been the custodian of the largest collection of his work.
The Bedstead (1939) was painted by Ravilious in a guesthouse in Le Havre, France, in March 1939 before the outbreak of war. He had travelled there to paint the port, but bad weather confined him inside. As a result, he found new indoor subjects, such as the bedroom where he stayed.
The interior depicted has been able to live on through the painting, unlike most of Le Havre, which sadly five years after this painting was made was mostly destroyed due to bombing, and Ravilious himself who was the first British war artist to die during World War II whilst in active service in 1942.
The original painting is part of the Towner Collection. Dimensions of original work: W55 x H44.7cm
