Hampden Park - Custom Print
King & McGaw

Eric Ravilious (1903 – 1942) was a British painter, designer, illustrator and wood-engraver, renowned for his iconic watercolour landscapes of the South Downs and English countryside. The Towner in Eastbourne (where Ravilious grew up) has long been the custodian of the largest collection of his work.
Hampden Park (c.1928) is a northern suburb of Eastbourne, near to where Ravilious lived. The focal point of this painting is a seated woman, which unusually for Ravilious he has depicted her facial features and the details of her outfit. It is suggested that the seated woman is Tirzah Garwood, a student of his at Eastbourne School of Art that would later become his wife.
As with several of Ravilious' earlier works, the watercolour paint is more wetly applied, creating a looser and more fluid character. This is an early example of his use of a path in composition to draw the eye into the picture. Present in many Ravilious landscapes, paths draw the eye to what is out of sight, promising mystery and adventures over the horizon.
The original painting is part of the Towner Collection. Dimensions of original work: W28.8 x H40.4cm
