Kirby Hall Fields No. 1 - Custom Print
King & McGaw

Eric Ravilious (1903 – 1942) was a British painter, designer, illustrator and wood-engraver, renowned for his iconic watercolour landscapes of the South Downs and English countryside. The Towner in Eastbourne (where Ravilious grew up) has long been the custodian of the largest collection of his work. In 1934,
Ravilious and his wife, Tirzah Garwood, purchased Bank House at Castle Hedingham, where Kirby Hall is also situated, and Ravilious painted Kirby Hall Fields No. 1 (c.1935) shortly after the move. The Essex countryside, particularly the areas around Great Bardfield and Castle Hedingham, are frequent depictions in Ravilious’ body of work. He was drawn to the muted colours and subtle patterns of the landscape, especially under grey skies.
The original painting is part of the Towner Collection. Dimensions of original work: W56.8 x H44.7cm
