Lighthouses at Newhaven - Custom Print
King & McGaw

Eric Ravilious (1903 – 1942) was a British painter, designer, illustrator and wood-engraver, renowned for his iconic watercolour landscapes of the South Downs and English countryside. The Towner in Eastbourne (where Ravilious grew up) has long been the custodian of the largest collection of his work.
Lighthouse at Newhaven (1935), as with many of Ravilious’ watercolours, has a static quality which creates an element of mystery within the work. The stillness is created in part by the precision of every painted element, such as the lines of the signal mast. However, the sweeping railway line seems to act against this, suggesting movement and leading us into and across the scene.
The original painting is part of the Towner Collection. Dimensions of original work: W58 x H45.3cm
