Lombardy Poplars - Custom Print
King & McGaw

Eric Ravilious (1903 – 1942) was a British painter, designer, illustrator and wood-engraver, renowned for his iconic watercolour landscapes of the South Downs and English countryside. The Towner in Eastbourne (where Ravilious grew up) has long been the custodian of the largest collection of his work. Lombardy Poplars (1935) was gifted by Eric Ravilious to his niece who lived in Eastbourne where he grew up.
The painting features Ravilious' characteristic feather like trees, however, seems different to his other notable compositions. This painting has the absence of a man-made structure – a frequent motif he used to draw the eye into the work – but instead Ravilious adds depth by blackening the space between the trees. His nod to human intervention is subtle and found in the four cut tree stumps in the foreground.
The original painting is part of the Towner Collection. Dimensions of original work: W54 x H43.5cm
