Starlight Landscape - Custom Print
King & McGaw

Edward Stott (1859-1918) was born in Rochdale, Lancashire. Stott was born into a wealthy family; his father was a businessman and mill owner, later the mayor of Rochdale. He was made to work in the family business for five years, all whilst undertaking evening classes at Manchester School of Art, before moving to Paris in 1880 to attend the École des Beaux Arts.
His work is associated with French naturalism, and he is best known for his paintings depicting rural life, latterly around his home, which he made in Amberley, West Sussex.
Starlight Landscape (1890) depicts a solitary tree at dusk in the Sussex countryside. Stott was described in 1908 as ‘the poet painter of the twilight’ and this painting is a prime example of why he was ascribed this title.
The original painting is part of the Towner Collection. Dimensions of original work: W48 x H42cm
