Judd's Farm - Custom Print
King & McGaw

Sir William Newzam Prior Nicholson (1872 – 1949) was best known as a landscape, portrait and still life painter. Nicholson lived in Rottingdean, just outside Brighton and most of his landscapes depict his surroundings in Sussex, to the extent that Nicholson became known as ‘the painter of the Downs’. Judd’s Farm (1912) portrays an isolated farm on the 650 acres that was later developed in the 1920s to become the town of Peacehaven – then synonymous with unregulated building and destruction of downland. While not possible to locate this farm on contemporary maps, it is known to be around Rottingdean, where Nicholson lived. Nicholson’s style was typically Edwardian, he used muted tones and applied paint with soft fluidity, as in this work.
The original painting is part of the Towner Collection. Dimensions of original work: W40 x H32cm
