King & McGaw

Tirzah Garwood (1908 – 1951) was a British painter, wood-engraver, paper marbler and author. Garwood studied at Eastbourne School of Art, where she was taught by Eric Ravilious, whom she later married in 1930.
Garwood is best known for her intricate wood engravings and marbling work; she only made around 20 paintings in her lifetime. Orchid Hunters in Brazil (1950) was completed by Garwood the year before her death from breast cancer, aged 43. Depicted are two men in a a tropical rainforest stepping ever closer to a venomous snake. As with so much of her work, it illustrates her love of nature and playful sense of humour.
The original painting is part of the Towner Collection. Dimensions of original work: W38.8 x H28.4 cm
