Eric Ravilious (1903 – 1942) was a British painter, designer, illustrator and wood-engraver, renowned for his iconic watercolour landscapes of the South Downs and English countryside. The Towner in Eastbourne (where Ravilious grew up) has long been the custodian of the largest collection of his work.
Furlongs was a cottage in the South Downs and home to Peggy Angus, a close friend of Ravilious and fellow student at the Royal College of Art.
Furlongs became a hive of artistic activity throughout the 1930s and the subject matter of many of Ravilious’ works. When he visited Furlongs, he felt ‘he had come to his own country’, as written by his biographer Helen Binyon. Furlongs (1934) was painted during one of his many visits, at the foot of the South Downs in Firle, near Lewes. This work is a rare example of Ravilious depicting human figures in his painting – that of Peggy Angus herself and a farm labourer leading a horse.
