Eric Ravilious (1903 – 1942) was a British painter, designer, illustrator and wood-engraver, renowned for his iconic watercolour landscapes of the South Downs and English countryside. The Towner in Eastbourne (where Ravilious grew up) has long been the custodian of the largest collection of his work.
Barrage Balloon (1940) was painted by Ravilious at Sheerness, Kent following his appointment as one of the first official War Artists to be appointed by the War Artists Advisory Committee (WAAC) in December 1939.
The original painting is part of the Towner Collection. Dimensions of original work: W47.7 x H38.5cm
